an essay on visiting a historical place 500 words

Last year, I had the opportunity to visit Agra with my uncle's family. As soon as I received the invitation, I accepted it because Agra had been a fine center of art and architecture since Mughal times. It is up to Akbar’s debt to transform Agra into a major city of cultural and historical significance. Interestingly, these monuments have paintings of both Hindu and Islamic cultures and architecture.

History has it that the ancient brick fortress of Sikandar Lodi was demolished by Akbar and erected a magnificent sandstone castle. For the same reason, the 'Fort of Agra' is also known as 'Lai Quila'. The fort was built by Akbar, AD 1565. It took eight years to complete.

The fort is said to have 500 architectural style buildings in Bengali and Gujarati. This is what Akbar historian Abul Fazal wrote. But unfortunately few survivors today and Akbar's successors also made a few changes and additions. The fort stands on the banks of the Yamuna River with two fortifications. These walls are very high.

The castle has four gates. Currently, access to the castle is allowed through the South Gate of the castle called the Amar Singh Rathore Gate. Just outside the gate there is a stone statue of a horse head made by Amar Singh Rathore of Jodhpur remembering his faithful horse that jumped the walls of the castle and lost its legs to save its master.

The western gate of the fort is called the Gate of Delhi at its entrance with statues of Jamal and Patta who laid down their lives fighting for Akbar. The space between the castle and the river was used to catch elephants.

In the background is the magnificent Akbar Palace, a flat roof and a paved stone floor. The Diwan-e-Aam palace was the place where he held his Darbar and executed justice. We also saw Diwan-e-Khas and Machhli Bhavan. Near Diwan-e-Aam is the Meena Bazaar. To the west is a curious building of the Hide and Seek architecture.

That Akbar is said to have owed the blessings of the Sufi man of Sikri, Sheikh Salim Chishti, to the birth of his son. So, to show his gratitude, Akbar built and developed Sikri and decided to relocate his capital there. The area is 40 km southwest of Agra. He named it Fatehpur Sikri. The buildings in Fatehpur Sikri stand out from their paintings.

There is an Ibadat-Khana designed to hold discussions on religious matters. But the glory of the city is Jama Mosque which can seat 10,000 worshipers and is believed to represent the Mosque in Mecca.

It is a monumental example of a mix of Persian and Indian style. Inside the Mosque is the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti. Right at the entrance to the Mosque is the famous Buland Darwaza which is 41 meters high from the ground level. Other buildings you can see in Fatehpur Sikri are the Panch Mahal, Jodha Bai’s Palace, Sunhera Makan and many other buildings.

Taj mahal

We went to see the great Taj Mahal on the banks of the river Yamuna. It is certainly a ‘miracle of the world’ as it is beyond any description. The words may be short to describe this “symbol of eternal love”. It is beautifully decorated with engraved gemstones. Built in memory of Shah Jahan's beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The real tomb of the queen is in a small house made of white and black marble. Quranic texts and verses on the walls as well as lovely floral designs and gemstones of various colors.

It's overall architectural appeal remains a question for modern architects and architects. They were very surprised to see the flawless Taj Mahal plan developed at a time when technology was not yet much advanced. Extraordinary beauty and made us say ‘Waah Taj!’ However, the only thing that bothered me was how much people had squandered this historical beauty. But our government has taken the right step at the right time by moving industries away from the Taj Mahal. So it was an enriching and enlightening experience to visit these places.

It is truly a ‘marble dream’ as thousands of poets have tried to interpret it in many ways. One is speechless at the sight of this magnificent marble spectacle. It was a very exciting trip.

Since then Agra and Fatehpur Sikri have become my favorite place to spend my holidays. Now I look forward to another opportunity to visit Agra.
